Denominator exhibition by Urs Fischer
On view September 9–October 15, 2022
“Objects are an extension of our bodies, our needs, our desires.”
— Urs Fischer
Urs Fischer ( @chaosursfischer ) shares 3 new works at @Gagosian , New York, coinciding with his presentation at Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles (by appointment only).
Denominator is a 12-foot cube constructed from LED screens that display a sequence of fragments from international television commercials in a shifting composition that spans the history of the medium. AI algorithms have deconstructed the commercials into individual shots, which are then grouped by theme or color and displayed in layered patterns and choreographed sequences.
People is a full-scale recontextualization of room 43 of the National Gallery, overlaid with a 360-degree projection of heads sourced from online videos. In this installation, the turn-of-the-century museum interior becomes a medium, illuminating occidental culture at the moment of its decoupling from institutional power and transforming it into an individualized form of expression, the projected heads representing thousands of people in the act of sharing their opinions with remote audiences.
CHAOƧ #501 is the culmination of a multiyear series of digital sculptures. The inaugural visualization on view in New York is a two-dimensional rendering on a 14-by-30-foot 8K wall display in which all one thousand digital objects from the CHAOƧ series move independently through a defined space. Each element in the CHAOƧ series is based on an everyday object undergoing a metamorphosis from physical to digital through various scanning processes. The details and imperfections found in the physical world are intentionally preserved.
Together, the objects assembled in CHAOƧ #501 form a subjective encyclopedic composition that tells the story of humanity through the artifacts it leaves behind. We primarily interact with matter that has been altered, cultivated, engineered, or manufactured, and as we fill the planet with new products, the variety of flora, fauna, and funga diminishes. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer “Common Measures”
On View Sep 9 – Oct 22, 2022 at @pacegallery New York
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer ( @lozanohemmer ) showcases 3 new installations that honor ephemerality as a salient aspect of the human condition:
Pulse Topology (2021), Call on Water (2016), and Hormonium (2022).
Pulse Topology, presented at Art Basel 2022, is an immersive biometric artwork consisting of 3,000 suspended lightbulbs, each glimmers to the heartbeat of a different participant from the past. Pulse sensors detect and record new heartbeats, which replace the oldest ones, creating a memento mori. The piece is inspired by the classic Mexican movie Macario, where the protagonist has a hunger-induced hallucination that shows each person on the planet represented by a frail, flickering candle.
A fountain work titled Call on Water features words from poems by Mexican writer Octavio Paz, rendered in water vapor in mid-air. Disappearing a few moments after they are composed, the airborne verses explore the lyrical and tangible qualities of the atmosphere. Call on Water utilizes hundreds of computer-controlled ultrasonic atomizers to produce legible wisps of pure, cold water vapor that answer Paz’s calls for “a fountain to read” and “breathable poetry.”
Hormonium, is a screen-based, generative artwork. The work depicts crashing ocean waves releasing airborne particles of text, which serve as acronyms for human hormones. Hormonium runs on circadian, ultradian, and infradian rhythms, all of which impact the levels of different hormones in the human body. For example, the work shows more adrenalin during the day and more melatonin at night, as well as insulin spikes three times a day during meals. The work also ages over the course of a 90-year cycle, reflecting decreases in levels of aldosterone, calcitonin, GH, and renin, and a rise in cortisol. In this way, Hormonium attempts to visualize the cyclical and complex nature of chronobiology. (at The Pace Gallery 510 W 25th)

Untitled (Your body is a battleground) - Barbara Kruger.
The exhibition features nine large-scale video works and installations, sound installations, and vinyl wallpaper.
Several works are reconfigured in new digital formats, transforming previously known static images into dynamic video works that allow her to change the words/context of her work moment to moment. Each one is augmented with striking sound effects, in which she translates her iconic paste-up collages from the 1980s to this new format
A new video installation, Untitled (No Comment) (2020). Kruger combines text, images, and audio clips with a barrage of found memes and other internet mainstays, ranging from blurred-out selfies to animated photos of cats, that foreground twenty-first-century modes of content consumption.
Also, don’t miss Untitled (I shop therefore I am), which targets Supreme streetwear.
This exhibition will coincide with a large-scale site-specific installation by Barbara Kruger: Thinking of You. I Mean Me. I Mean You. in the Marron Family Atrium of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, on view from July 16, 2022, to January 2, 2023.

Bruce Munro “Field of Light” at Sensorio in Paso Robles, California.
Field of Light is a 15-acre walk-through experience. Bruce Munro’s largest artwork to date; this solar-powered art installation consists of more than 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber optics, “planted” across 15 acres of rolling hills, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms morphing color undulating the landscape.
A 3-hour experience, you arrive an hour before sunset. There’s food & several bars. The VIP area is an elevated area with chairs, firepits on each table, and great views to watch the sunset sequence (1st video). You can walk around for 3 hours in the space. There’s also a new installation, “Light Towers” (last video), an light/sound installation.
This has become a permanent installation at Sensorio and will be expanded with more lights across more acres on the property soon.
And if you’re in Texas, @FieldOfLightAustin opens September 2022!

James Turrell “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace at Rice University (2012)
I got lucky and caught this on a clear night with a full moon. Except for the first photo, the photos are in chronological order. The last is a video of additional images. All unfiltered. This is #PublicArt at its’s finest. If you are ever in Houston, get up and catch this at sunrise or when there is a musical performance.
The James Turrell Skyspace is Houston’s most iconic public artwork. Gifted to Rice by alumna Suzanne Deal Booth, who worked for the artist while in graduate school at NYU and helped him build the first Skyspace at MoMA PS1 in New York, Twilight Epiphany is the 73rd in Turrell’s groundbreaking series of light-filled architectural spaces.
Six days a week (Wed-Mon, closed Tue) at sunrise and sunset, LED lights in the upper viewing area of the structure project a slowly-changing spectrum of light against the pure white ceiling and through an aperture in the 72-foot square knife-edge roof of the Skyspace, conflating the rich tones of cast light with the naturally-occurring, changing colors of the sky.
Built in 2012 and made of Grass, concrete, composite steel, granite, plaster, paint, and LED lighting, the structure accommodates 120 people between two levels. Twilight Epiphany is the first Skyspace engineered for acoustics, both for live performances and electronic music. It serves as a performative laboratory for Shepherd School students, faculty, and visiting artists.
The sunrise light sequence begins approximately 40 minutes before sunrise; I recommend arriving an hour before sunrise. The Sunset light sequence begins about 10 minutes before sunset. Each sequence lasts approximately 40 minutes. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to secure your seat.

William Monk “The Ferryman” On View Apr 29 – Jun 11, 2022 at @PaceGallery
Monk is known for his atmospheric, vibrant paintings that feature mysterious and otherworldly forms. His semiabstract paintings are deeply engaged with the rich tradition and history of the medium. The artist frequently creates works as part of a series, drawing on multifarious sources of inspiration connected to his own experience.
Like his other bodies of work, Monk’s new paintings evade easy categorization and interpretation. As the artist has said, “Only after the work is complete do I become aware of specific past experiences that helped to inform it—perhaps in the same way that a dream picks up on certain conscious moments and twists them.”

Glenn Kaino “Raise Your Voice in Silence” On View May 20 – Jun 11, 2022 at @PaceGallery New York
@gkstudio first solo exhibition with @pacegallery spotlights a single large-scale installation reflecting Kaino’s decade-long collaboration with Olympic track and field athlete Tommie Smith.
The exhibition, highlights the artist’s boundary-pushing and rigorous investigations into art’s potential to catalyze change.
Known for multidisciplinary, activist-minded practice, he incorporates disparate ideas, systems, media, and art historical points of reference, with a focus on social justice and dialogue. In his first exhibition, the artist presents the sculpture Bridge (Raise Your Voice in Silence) (2021) suspended from the gallery’s ceiling. Featuring a series of repeating casts of Smith’s arm, immortalizing his storied human rights salute after winning the gold medal in the 200-meter men’s race at the 1968 Olympic Games. Immersive and rhythmic, this 50-foot-long installation speaks to the enduring impact of the Olympian’s historic protest, which has reverberated through time and space, while proposing a physical and metaphorical path forward. Drawing connections between activism and protest movements of the past and present, Bridge (Raise Your Voice in Silence) exemplifies Kaino’s commitment to collaboration and his belief that cultural production can inspire progressive change in the current moment.
“I think one of the most important roles of an artist is to imagine new futures, to think about what we can become as a society and to use their work to inspire change”
Concurrently with Pace’s exhibition, Kaino, in partnership with The Atlantic and @superblue.art has created and directed a large-scale, immersive show that will inspire audiences to reimagine their relationship to the natural world. ( @aforestla ) (at The Pace Gallery 510 W 25th)

Doug Aitken “Wilderness” at @303gallery April 27 – May 27, 2022
Wilderness is a film installation that uses a series of song cycles created by Aitken to narrate and capture the modern landscape as it moves from day into night. The artwork flows from person to person, following a subconscious thread where sound and language create the connective tissue. The piece was filmed over two and a half years on the same stretch of urban beach, within a one-mile radius of the artist’s home.
The lyrics sung in the film are AI-generated digital voices that form a fragile structure and express a collective consciousness. The voices sound raw and vulnerable, their message grows increasingly restless, evolving as the digital undertone builds as the work progresses into night.
Also in the installation is twilight (triptych), a group of three payphones recast as translucent forms and filled with light. This generative light sculpture glows and pulses with color in reaction to the viewer.
